Barnet Homes and Barnet Southgate College gas engineering apprentice Brooke has won the Learning for Good Work Award for 2024 in the Mayor of London’s Adult Learning Awards.
Brooke’s gas supervisor at Barnet Homes, Scott Doman, said:
“Brooke has been working with us at Barnet Homes for three years now. She’s a brilliant member of the team, respected by everyone.”
Brooke has been studying at Barnet and Southgate College’s Colindale Campus as part of the College’s apprenticeship programme.
After first taking a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Housing and Property Management, she moved up to a Level 3 Apprenticeship in Gas Engineering, which she passed and qualified as a gas engineer last summer.
Brooke said of her Mayor of London’s award:
“I’m absolutely thrilled to win this … school was never easy for me with my ADHD and dyslexia and I didn’t have much confidence in myself after leaving school – but it just goes to show what can happen if you have people who believe in you and support you, and you put in a lot of hard work.
“I now stand here as a qualified gas engineer having overcome my struggles with maths and classroom learning and have carved a career for myself moving forward. This award is recognition of that commitment and what can be achieved if you work hard.”
Manjit Bansal, Gas Engineering tutor at Barnet and Southgate College, said:
“She proved herself through working hard, consistently putting in extra hours at home, asking questions to clarify her understanding. I’m proud of her.”
Dale Warburton, Gas Manager at Barnet Homes added:
“Brooke adds to the team with her enthusiasm and desire to develop and progress within the team. Hopefully Brooke will be the start of a change in recruitment for the gas team. We can take on apprentices and support them to progress and become an integral part of the team, steeped in the Barnet Homes values.”
