Ever thought of recycling old unwanted books and turning them into memories? Your Choice Barnet are doing exactly this to help residents with dementia care needs.
Your Choice Barnet’s Activity Co-ordinator Carol Pintus has provided books to residents at Dell Field Court that had been donated, so these could be used as memory books. Each resident was able to use their own images to build collages which tell the stories of moments in their own lives. In the long-term, this will encourage residents to have topics to discuss and reminisce with other care home residents. For many who are staying at Dell Field Court, they require dementia care, this is fantastic way for residents to recall what they do remember to assist them with their memory and communication with residents, as well as friends and family who come to visit.
Carol commented to say “It is such a lovely activity and very personal, and even the family members end up really enjoying it as they know that their loved ones are doing something constructive and building new memories in the care home they stay.
It is also good exercise for the memory as reminiscence, and exercise for their hands and they cut and glue images on the book!”
If you are considering a clear out and your local charity shop will not accept your book, do visit your nearest Your Choice Barnet care home, who will be able to make good use of it. To view all our current care homes, visit our website here.
