Hosting a play street gives children an opportunity to play safely and freely on their street. Play streets also act as a community building activity with children getting a chance to play with all the children in the neighbourhood and neighbours can come together to meet.

Play streets are a community event run by residents. They provide children with a safe and free space to play on their street. Play streets offer many benefits, such as:

  • giving children more opportunities to play close to their homes
  • allowing neighbours to come together and build their community
  • helping children learn about their neighbourhood while being physically active

Barnet Council’s pilot programme on Leopold Road was a success, and the residents really appreciated the scheme. One of the residents shared, “We loved getting to know neighbours and playing safely, my daughter has learned to ride a bike while safe from cars.”

Barnet play streets are free to apply for and it can be a long-term application, up to a maximum length of twelve months.

Residents need to apply least 10 weeks before the planned date. Find out more here.
