Throughout the year our Sheltered Housing Team organise social events, which play a very important part in supporting older people.

The latest event on the Sheltered Housing social calendar? The annual Autumn Tea Dance, which saw around 80 people from Barnet Homes sheltered accommodation, Your Choice Barnet services and the older community at large.

The Mayor of Barnet, Cllr Reuben Thompstone, who is Barnet’s youngest Mayor said he was privileged to acknowledge the contribution older people make to the community:

“I am privileged to be in the company of such a wealth of experience.  That’s why it is such a concern to think that there are older people in Barnet who are lonely and can’t get out. Events like the Barnet Homes Autumn Tea Dance are a fantastic opportunity for older people to get out, meet new people and socialise.”

The dance social was held at St Mary’s Church Hall and featured a very lively entertainer, a raffle and of course, lots of cups of tea.

And the people who attended themselves also had high praise for the positive benefits that social interaction like this can bring older people.

One resident of Christ Church Close said: “I used to be a nurse and still love being around people. I think Susan and the team do an amazing job of organising events for older people and I wish they could do more events like this. I know myself and my fellow residents always look forward to coming.”

There’s plenty of events happening  in Barnet for older people during Silver Week, 1-7 October.
