Who knew sitting in a chair could be so energetic? This week service users at CommunitySpace were treated to a robust session of Chair Aerobics as part of a day dedicated to supporting them to lead healthier lifestyles.

Mencap’s Learning Disability Week had the theme of health this year. The object of the week is to raise awareness among the general population about the challenges that people living with disabilities face. Their #Treatmewell campaign calls on the NHS to adapt services for people with learning disabilities which will help to save lives. Sadly, 1200 people with a learning disability die avoidably in hospital, each and every year.

As part of Learning Disability Week, staff at CommunitySpace hosted a number of sessions, including healthy eating worksshop, building self-esteem and why it’s healthy to work. The day was finished off by a group walk in the sunshine.

CommunitySpace Co-ordinator Nikki Barnett, said: “We enjoyed a full day with Chair Aerobics with a very entertaining instructor, a Tai Chi taster-session plus information sessions. Some of our friends from Flower Lane also joined in! A great day was had by all”
