Every year, staff at The Barnet Group take the opportunity of Black History Month to celebrate the diversity of its customers and the community it serves.

This year staff went for the ‘History of Motown’ to acknowledge the influence the black-owned label had in paving the way for a multi-cultural society in America in the wake of the Civil Rights era. And thus inspiring similar efforts, through a younger generation experiencing the ‘wave’ of black American music for the first time, to break down racial barriers in their own communities.

The event, which was completely self-funded by staff, who also spent their own time making 7-inch vinyl record sleeves and actual records as table decorations and placements – ensuring the Motown theme was singing from the rooftops!

During the event, ‘The Inside Story of Motown’ presentation revealed a special Motown connection here in Barnet, which was a true example of how Motown’s global impact reached the UK, too.
