Winter is well on its way with much of the UK set to be hit by freezing temperatures this week – with some areas looking set for an artic blast. We would like to share some tips with on you on how to keep warm and well during the winter months – as well as reminding you to keep an eye on vulnerable and elderly family, friends and neighbours.

Hundreds of people in the UK needlessly die every year because they are living in cold housing and can’t afford to pay their heating bill.

Please make sure you, and any vulnerable and/or elderly people you know, follow simple guidelines to keep warm over winter.

Keep your house at the right temperature to ward off ill health, colds, flu and pneumonia. For a healthy adult, your main living room should be between 18-21c (64-70f). You can also use a hot water bottle and/or layers of blankets to keep warm while in bed.

Several layers of clothing are better than one thick one one, as warmth from your body is trapped between layers. Always wear hats, gloves and scarves. If possible, stay inside during a cold period if you have heart or breathing problems. If you do have to go out, take care in icy and snowy conditions, wear boots or shoes with good grip on the soles.

Some people are more vulnerable than others when it comes to managing the cold weather during the winter season such as very young children and people over 60.

Detailed advice and information, such as contacting your GP regarding a flu jab (if you are in those categories), taking the time to keep active and information about help towards the cost of your heating bills are all on Barnet Council’s Winter Well web page: www.barnet.gov.uk/winterwell
